The Vision

After an extended absence, I've finally gotten another hero to the point that they feel appropriate to post up here.

Vision is one of the most powerful Avengers, with a very unique power set, and definitely feels like he could take just about any other Avengers in a one-on-one fight if he had to.

Name: The Vision
Race: Android
Experience: 5 (Novice)
Power Level: Deity with Super Karma (100 PP)
Agility d8; Smarts d10; Spirit d8; Strength d12+3–d12+9; Vigor d12
Pace 6; Parry 6; Charisma –2; Toughness 24 (6)–30 (6)
Hindrances: Code of Honor, Heroic, Outsider, Pacifist (m)
Edges: Arcane Background (Super Powers), Alertness, Brave, Level Headed
Skills: Fighting d8, Knowledge (Computers) d12, Notice d6, Persuasion d8, Shooting d10, Taunt d4
Powers:
  • Armor +6 (7): Heavy Armor. (Vibranium-laced skin.)
  • Construct (8): +2 to recover from being Shaken; doesn't breathe; immune to disease and poison; ignores one level of wound penalties.
  • Doesn't Eat (1): The Vision doesn't require food to operate.
  • Doesn't Sleep (2): At night, Vision effectively goes onto standby: he doesn't actually need sleep.
  • Gifted (2): With his processor and access to the internet, there's not a whole lot Vision can't do (he's not great at cooking, though).
  • Interface (2): Being an ex-A.I., Vision possesses many of Jarvis' skills with electronics.
  • Super Attribute (24): Agility +1, Smarts +2, Strength +6, Vigor +3.
  • Super Edge (2): Level Headed. Jarvis can process information extremely quickly.
  • Super Skill (2): Knowledge (Computers) +2
  • Toughness +10 (13): Hardy. (Vibranium body.)
Density Control (Switchable)
  • Attack, Melee (5): Damage Str+2d6. Heavy Weapon
  • Flight (2): Pace.
  • Growth (30): Level 6 (+6 to Strength and Toughness). Density, Fast Growth. Switchable (primary).
with
  • Attack, Ranged (20): Range 50/100/200, Damage 4d10, RoF 2, AP 6, Heavy Weapon, Lethal.
  • Flight (12): Pace 96, Climb 0, –2 to hit while flying.
  • Heightened Senses (1): Eagle Eyes.
with
  • Extra Action (1): Level 1. Limitation (–2, intangibility only).
  • Intangibility (12): Phase, Reflexive Control. (Density control.)
  • Flight (20): Mach 10+, Climb 0, –10 to hit while flying.
During the Ultron event, the Avengers at the time stole away what was to be Ultron's final body, including the Mind Stone embedded into its head. Once it was safely stored in Avengers Tower, though, Tony Stark had the idea to bring it to life for their side using fragments of Jarvis. He and Banner almost completed before being met with resistance by Captain Rogers and the Maximoff twins, ultimately being brought to life by a supercharged power surge from Thor.

The Vision first gained consciousness surrounded by the Avengers, lashing out at Thor before calming down and seeing the beauty of life below the tower. Having good knowledge of the situation at hand, Vision opted to help the Avengers stop Ultron's genocide. He assisted the rest of the Avengers by shutting Ultron out of the internet and helping to clean up the remaining Ultron drones and save Sokovia.

Nearly a year later, Vision was a fully fledged member of the New Avengers, developing a close relationship with Wanda Maximoff. When the Lagos incident occurred Vision sided with Tony Stark on the subject of the newly-introduced Sokovia Accords, and tried to protect Wanda from the public by keeping her on lockdown inside the Avengers compound. Unfortunately, Barton's intervention brought Wanda out of hiding, and Vision was effectively buried underneath the Avengers compound. He escaped, flying directly towards Leipzig to help Tony contain Captain Rogers and his team.

During the skirmish, Colonel Rhodes was accidentally hit by a stray beam from the Vision and was paralyzed. After this point, the Vision remained out of the conflict, and was last seen at the nearly-abandoned Avengers compound.

The Vision has an extremely unique and iconic power set. To create his density control, I simply created "Density" as a +6 modifier for Growth: you still can change your weight, Strength, and Toughness, but your Size doesn't change.

Natasha Romanoff—Black Widow

And now, we finally round out the roster of our original Avengers! (Except for some minor rewrites coming for Iron Man and Thor, but shh, don't tell anyone!) This has been a long time coming, but we're finally able to have the complete team together, just in time for them all to break apart and completely reform the team.

EDIT: I actually had some discussion come up about Natasha's skill distribution recently, particularly her Persuasion skill. I figured it was relevant enough to link to here, so hopefully this is a nice little read into my design mindset and philosophy.

  • Stun (2): Strong. Device (–1).
Natalia was recruited by the KGB at a young age and was placed into training in the Red Room facility, where she was indoctrinated and educated in Russian spycraft. Her expertise and effectiveness put her on S.H.I.E.L.D.'s radar very quickly, and Clint Barton was sent after her to eliminate the threat. He disobeyed this order, however, and recommended her as a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent. From there on, Barton and Romanoff became partners, and Natalia changed her name to Natasha.

In 2009, Natasha had a run in with the legendary Winter Soldier. After being hired to protect a nuclear scientist, the assassin eliminated his target by firing a round through her stomach and into the scientist.

Iron Man 2 Inventory: Padded S.H.I.E.L.D. Suit (Armor +1), wire garrote, Walther PPK/S (2d6, AP 1, 12/24/48, Semi-Auto, 7 Shots), commlink, Widow's Bite (poison and stun powers, fires a rope projectile up to 50 yards with Shooting), flashbang (5/10/20, use the blind power with a raise in a MBT), taser disks (5/10/20, 3d6 EMP damage, target must make a Vigor roll at –2 or be Incapacitated and fall prone).

A couple years later, Natasha was put on a mission to infiltrate the Stark Industries legal department, working her way up the corporate ladder to get close to Tony himself and try to keep a close eye on him. She was quickly hired on as Stark's personal assistant after he signed his company over to Pepper Potts.

She witnessed the fight between Tony and Colonel Rhodes at the former's birthday party, and tracked down Stark later on with Fury to lay their cards on the table: they knew he needed to find a cure for the palladium poisoning, but he needed to make progress on it or they'd shut him down.

Romanoff was present at the Battle of Stark Expo, going with Stark's bodyguard to break into Hammer Industries HQ to intercept the terrorist Ivan Vanko. After stealing all the designs they could get their hands on and destroying the building, Natasha was ordered to shadow Bruce Banner at Culver University, and was almost killed as a bystander during the rampage. Afterwards, she was sent to retrieve Banner before General Ross captured him, but failed, instead capturing Samuel Sterns instead.

Avengers Prelude Inventory (comic prelude): Padded S.H.I.E.L.D. Suit (Armor +1), wire garrote, dagger ×2 (Str+d4), Glock 26 ×2 (2d6, AP 1, 12/24/48, Semi-Auto, 10 Shots), commlink, Widow's Bite (poison and stun powers, fires a rope projectile up to 50 yards with Shooting), glider pack (Pace 24, Climb –2, may glide up to 10× the initial height), autograpnel, smoke grenade (obscure power with a raise in a MBT).

Romanoff was then dispatched to Moscow, where she searched for missing Stark Industries tech, infiltrating a night club to try and interrogate an illegal arms dealer. Unfortunately, her target was killed by an unknown assailant, and she was forced to escape. The assassin revealed herself as a fan that was after the alias of the Black Widow, and Romanoff agreed to meet with her to try and keep her from interfering further. These and several other confrontations ended in the death of the "admirer," as well as an aborted nuclear missile launch set to destabilize world peace.

Nearly a year later, Romanoff was tasked once again to collect Banner. Tracking him to Kolkata, she convinced him to come and assist S.H.I.E.L.D. with locating the tesseract, stolen by Loki. Banner agreed, and she escorted him to the S.H.I.E.L.D. helicarrier, before being assigned to transport Steve Rogers to Germany to capture Loki. During the attack, Stark arrived to halt the fight, capturing Loki, and on the way back to the Helicarrier Thor arrived to attempt to retrieve Loki, prompting Iron Man and Rogers to pursue. Eventually, Thor was persuaded to their side.

Back at the carrier, Natasha used her interrogation skills to trick Loki into telling her that his plan was to unleash the Hulk onto the carrier, but soon after Barton arrived under Loki's control and detonated a bomb on one of the carrier's turbines. The explosion triggered Hulk's transformation, which gave her chase but ultimately knocked her out. Upon waking, she was sent to intercept Barton, knocking him out and breaking Loki's control. Natasha then went on with Barton and Rogers to assist in the battle of New York against the Chitauri, and she was the Avenger able to retrieve Loki's scepter and close the portal.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier Inventory: Padded S.H.I.E.L.D. Suit (Armor +1), wire garrote, dagger ×2 (Str+d4), Glock 26 ×2 (2d6, AP 1, 12/24/48, Semi-Auto, 10 Shots), Commlink, Widow's Bite (poison and stun powers, fires a rope projectile up to 50 yards with Shooting), photostatic veil (chameleon power with Voice modifier, requires DNA and voice sample, one-time use, and only changes face (not shape or Size). –4 to Notice, –2 to Notice if not the same body type, straight Notice or instantly recognized if wrong gender), taser disks (5/10/20, 3d6 EMP damage, target must make a Vigor roll at –2 or be Shaken).

After this, Romanoff and Rogers became partners working on S.H.I.E.L.D. missions together, going undercover in a terrorist cell in Chicago and gaining their trust to allow Rogers to retrieve a stolen weapon from them. Two years after the battle of New York, her and Rogers were assigned to liberate the Lemurian Star, a S.H.I.E.L.D. vessel hijacked by Georges Batroc, though Natasha's real mission was data retrieval.

After Nick Fury's apparent assassination by the Winter Soldier, Natasha and Cap were forced undercover, trying to unlock Fury's secret USB with some encrypted data on it as their former STRIKE team hunted them down. They eventually found Arnim Zola, stored in a mass of computer banks in an old S.H.I.E.L.D. facility, telling them that he was recruited in Operation Paperclip and began to reform HYDRA within S.H.I.E.L.D. before a missile strike annihilated the base.

They survived and made their way to Sam Wilson, a friend of Rogers', and enlisted his help in overturning the HYDRA conspiracy, but not before another run-in with the Winter Soldier. After being taken to a hidden facility where Fury was still alive, they organized a plan to topple HYDRA and S.H.I.E.L.D., where Romanoff posed as a member of the World Security Council to get close enough to Alexander Pierce, Secretary of Defense and HYDRA agent, to get him to leak all of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s old files. She then spent the next year or so attempting to find a new identity.

Natasha was eventually called back into action by Maria Hill, retrieving Loki's stolen scepter from a HYDRA base under Baron von Strucker. In this time, Romanoff and Banner had formed a close relationship, where she assisted him in calming down enough to revert into the good doctor. She was instrumental in the Ultron incursion, keeping track of Ultron's moves around the globe and assisting in intercepting Ultron's cradle, but was captured and taken back to Strucker's old fortress as a prisoner. Sending a signal out to the Avengers, she was rescued by Banner and assisted in the Battle of Sokovia by evacuating civilians and keeping Ultron's drones from dropping the city back to the earth.

Natasha is currently training and co-leading the New Avengers team alongside Captain America, and new recruits War Machine, Falcon, Vision, and Scarlet Witch.

Pietro Maximoff—Quicksilver

As we enter the month leading into Civil War, I felt like it would be prudent to try and start wrapping up some of the loose ends from the big movie characters, and it seemed like a good idea to work on a character that is probably not going to be developed anymore ever.

Name: Pietro Maximoff
Race: Human
Experience: 0 Experience (Novice)
Power Level: Four Color with Super Karma (55 PP)
Agility d12; Smarts d6; Spirit d6; Strength d8; Vigor d10
Pace 6; Parry 6; Charisma 2; Toughness 7
Hindrances: Heroic, Lech, Loyal, Vengeful (M)
Edges: Arcane Background (Super Powers), Attractive, Brave, The Best There Is (speed), Extraction, Quick.
Skills: Fighting d8, Notice d6, Persuasion d6, Stealth d8, Streetwise d4, Taunt d6, Throwing d6.
Inventory: Commlink.
Powers:
  • Attack, Melee (7): Damage Str+2d6, AP 4, Multiple Attacks. Contingent (–1, speed).
  • Extra Action (15): Five extra actions per round. (Super speed.)
  • Speed (17): Super Sonic Speed, –8 to hit. Blinding Reflexes, Catch and Throw. Limitation (–2, when Clubs are drawn in combat, make a Vigor roll; on a failure, he is Shaken. On a roll of 1 or less, he gains a level of Fatigue).
  • Super Attribute (12): Agility +3, Strength +1, Vigor +2. (Hyper metabolism.)
  • Super Edge (4): Extraction, Quick. (Super speed.)
Pietro Maximoff was born in Sokovia with his twin sister, Wanda. At the age of 10, their parents were killed in a bombing, and they both spent two days trapped in the rubble of their apartment with a Stark weapon. They developed a deep hatred for America and Tony Stark, which later extended to the Avengers as a whole. In their adulthood, the twins attended multiple protests against both the States and S.H.I.E.L.D.

The country of Sokovia is small and has been occupied several times in recent history. The Maximoffs participated in riots against foreign forces until they were approached by a HYDRA scientist offering to give them great power. Pietro was utterly convinced to accept, and he was brought with his sister to a secret experimental facility, where the scientists subjected them to the mysterious chitauri scepter. While many volunteers perished, Wanda and Pietro survived with incredible abilities.

Several months after these experiments began, the facility that the twins were in was assaulted by the Avengers attempting to retrieve the scepter. In the confusion, and against the wishes of Baron Von Strucker, Pietro and Wanda escaped to disrupt the assault. Pietro intercepted and smashed into Hawkeye, dropping him to the ground before speeding off and slamming into Captain America and returning to his sister inside the fortress. She convinced him to let Tony go and deconstruct the Avengers from the inside. As HYDRA fell, the twins escaped.

Pietro began to steal to provide for his sister, but Ultron caught wind of them and convinced them to assist him in his conquest against the Avengers. The twins joined him at the salvage yard to attempt to intimidate Ulysses Klaue out of his vibranium stores. During this incursion, the Avengers arrived, and the twins assisted in fighting them off, along with Ultron's drones. After the battle, in Seoul, Wanda realized that Ultron really wanted to destroy humanity, and the twins escaped away from him.

Later, they intercepted Ultron on the Seoul train, keeping him from pummeling Captain Rogers against the train wall. Ultron blasted the train controls, however, and Pietro sped away to save civilians while his sister worked to stop the runaway train. Cap brought the twins to Avengers tower where they found Stark and Banner attempting to work on the Vision. While Cap and Tony argued the merits of creating another A.I., Pietro sped through and unplugged all the machinery, though Thor broke in at the last minute to power the cradle back on.

After some deliberation, the twins joined the Avengers to return to Sokovia and fight Ultron one last time. Pietro and Wanda began the evacuations, and Pietro jumped straight ahead to begin smashing the Ultron drones. He happily assisted in defending the keystone with the rest of the Avengers, but when he saw Ultron's quinjet coming in for a strafing run against Barton, he sacrificed himself to save his new ally.

Clint Barton—Hawkeye

Out of all the characters I've tossed together on here, I don't think any of them have gone through as many iterations and Power Level changes as our dear old Hawkeye. The unassuming super-archer is so interesting to get just right, since he uses a lot of archery Edges that are mostly geared towards fantasy settings and has such a wide variety of specialty arrows.

I outline most of my thoughts on all of these design subjects below, but for the most part I think I finally have a finished version of Hawkeye... at least until we see more trick arrows in Civil War.

Name: Clinton Francis Barton
Race: Human
Experience: 90 (Legendary)
Power Level: Four Color with Super Karma (55 PP)
Agility d10; Smarts d8; Spirit d8; Strength d10; Vigor d8
Pace 6; Parry 7; Charisma 0; Toughness 7 (1)
Hindrances: Bad Luck, Heroic, Obligation (M—S.H.I.E.L.D.), Vengeful (m)
Edges: Arcane Background (Super Powers), Ambidextrous, The Best There Is (ranged attack), Brave, Accurate Attack (Shooting), Improved Dodge, Marksman, Quick Draw, Rapid Shooter, Steady Hands, Improved Trademark Weapon (bow), Ace, Level Headed, Command, Combat Reflexes, Frenzy, Hard to Kill, Inspire.
Skills: Climbing d6, Driving d6, Fighting d10, Knowledge (Communications) d8, Knowledge (Espionage) d6, Notice d10, Persuasion d6, Piloting d8, Shooting d10 [d12+3 with bows], Stealth d6, Taunt d6, Throwing d10
Inventory: Hawkeye's Bow (2d6, 12/24/48), Laser Sight (Shooting +1), Teflon Arrows ×36 (AP 2), Knife (Str+d4), Rope Arrow (50'), 3× Shock Arrows (Vigor –2 or Incapacitated; Vigor to revive), Padded S.H.I.E.L.D. Suit (Armor +1), 2× Quiver, Commlink, Archery Bracer, Shooting Glove.
Powers:
  • Heightened Senses (1): Eagle Eye.
  • Super Attribute (8): Agility +2, Strength +1, Vigor +1. (S.H.I.E.L.D. training.)
  • Super Edge (14): Accurate Attack (Shooting), Dodge, Marksman, Quick Draw, Rapid Shooter, Steady Hands, Trademark Weapon (bow). (S.H.I.E.L.D. training.)
  • Super Skill (13): Fighting +1, Knowledge (Communications) +2, Knowledge (Espionage) +2, Notice +2, Shooting +4, Throwing +2. Limitation (–1, Shooting applies to bows only). (S.H.I.E.L.D. training.)
Specialty Arrows (Switchable):
  • Anti-Tank Arrows (19): Range 12/24/48, Damage 5d10, RoF 1, LBT, Focus, Heavy Weapon, Lethal. Device (–2, arrows). Switchable (primary).
with
  • Explosive Arrows (6): Range 12/24/48, Damage 4d6, RoF 1, AP 2, MBT, Lethal. Device (–2, arrows).
  • Burst Arrows (3): Range 12/24/48 or Cone, Damage 3d6, SBT, Lethal. Device (–2, arrows), Limitation (–1, SBT).
  • Interface (1): Limitation (–1, only works with malfunction).
  • Malfunction (1): Device (–2, arrows). (Hacking arrow.)
  • Stun (4): MBT, Strong, Projectile (explosive arrows), Device (–2, arrows).
with
  • Melting Arrows (15): Rapid Decay ×6, Strong. Device (–2, arrows).
Clint Barton was been an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. for years, all the way until its collapse in 2014. Recruited from a young age due to his exceptional marksmanship, he was already in a relationship with his future wife, Laura, but requested that Nick Fury keep her and their children out of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s official records to keep them safe.

Barton was eventually given the codename "Hawkeye" by his comrades in S.H.I.E.L.D.'s military arm. He forgoes firearms on most missions, however, preferring the silence and adaptability of modern bows to more "blunt instrument" rifles. One of his most important missions was to assassinate a young Russian agent that went by the name Black Widow, but he instead spared her, opting to put her on S.H.I.E.L.D.'s payroll instead, and they became extremely close friends.

Barton has since been on missions around the world, but was mostly out of harm's way until he was sent as an escort out to New Mexico to keep guard over a mysterious 0-8-4 item that appeared to be some kind of hammer. During an assault from one individual, Hawkeye was pulled from the kill order, but spotted one of the man's accomplices and gave Agent Coulson the idea to tail him. The man later turned out to be Thor, making this Barton's first encounter with superhuman individuals.

Barton was later assigned to Project P.E.G.A.S.U.S. to keep watch around the tesseract research facility. Unfortunately, he was one of the individuals affected by Loki's scepter, and he fell under the god's control for some time. He assisted in extracting the tesseract and led teams in both the extraction of an iridium sample and the assault on the helicarrier, disabling two of the engines and freeing Loki from capture before being knocked unconscious by Natasha Romanoff.

Barton then participated in the battle of New York, his piloting skills and marksmanship both assisting both Rogers and Romanoff on the ground, and was made a member of the legendary Avengers super-team, serving with them in most large-scale assaults on HYDRA bases. During the war on Ultron, Barton's farmhouse was used as a safehouse after their defeat in South Africa, and used his abilities in communications to track an imprisoned Romanoff to Sokovia. He was also instrumental in convincing Scarlet Witch to work with the Avengers, though has recently retired from Avenging to spend time with his family.

Hawkeye has two unique Edges, which will be listed in greater detail below, but what I personally find more interesting is the difference between his powers and his gear. His bow is a unique piece of equipment, using normal teflon arrows, as well as two notable specialty arrows (his shock and rope arrows). These are both low-powered enough to warrant being specifically listed, but not enough to eat up his Power Points. Initially I had given him the swinging power, but he only ever uses the rope arrow once to keep himself from dying, rather than to actively swing over the battlefield. His other specialty arrows, however, are otherwise unchanged. The melting arrows are extremely potent, and his anti-tank arrows are extremely heavy hitting, able to take out tanks in a single hit.

All of these arrows are considered Devices, but do not have the Ranged Touch Attack modifier because they can both be used at range or in melee, but can only be launched by his bow (and most of his arrows, such as his anti-tank and stun arrows, are useless in melee as he could be caught in the burst as well).

His custom Edges are Accurate Attack and Rapid Shooter:

Accurate Attack
Requirements: Veteran, Agility d8+, Fighting, Shooting, or Throwing d10+
This character is extensively practiced striking targets that are smaller than average; he may halve all Called Shot penalties (but not range or Cover penalties). This Edge may be taken multiple times, each time for a different skill (Fighting, Shooting, or Throwing).

Rapid Shooter
Requirements: Novice, Quick Draw, Strength d6+, Shooting d8+
This archer may loose two arrows in rapid succession when firing a bow. This allows you to make an additional Shooting attack per round at –2 to all Shooting rolls. Both attacks must be made at the same time, though they don't need to target the same foe (Wild Cards roll two Shooting dice and one Wild Die).
This Edge cannot be combined with the Aim maneuver or the Marksman Edge, and doesn't work with crossbows.

Hopefully he has more specialty arrows or Edges to work with in Civil War to round him out even more than he already is.

Tony Stark—Iron Man

Robert Downy Jr. Tony Stark is the centerpiece of the MCU. Charismatic, intelligent, and rockin' a sweet suit of armor, his 2008 film kickstarted one of the largest and highest grossing film/TV franchises ever. *Stark's power set has varied between movies as he switches between suits. All notable previous suits will be listed over in this entry.

Tony Stark: genius billionaire playboy philanthropist? Well, certainly, yes, but he hides a heart of gold and an enormous desire to not only make the world a better place, but to make up for him and his company's past deeds and accidental involvement with terrorist organizations. He is arrogant and refuses to cooperate with authority figures, but his genius ability to invent his suits and his funds to keep them repaired allow him to disregard most of these figures anyways. That said, he truly cares about people's well being and has devoted his life to training and building to try and help them while his girlfriend Pepper runs the business.

When he was young, Tony's father was hardly the greatest role model, but he had another father figure instead: Jarvis. After the death of Howard and Maria, followed shortly by the death of his butler, Howard's friend Obadiah took control of Stark Industries. Though the young Stark was a genius—creating the J.A.R.V.I.S. A.I. system and graduating suma cum lade at M.I.T. at 17—he didn't have the know-how to manage his family's empire. A few months later, however, control of the company was transferred back to Tony as he helped lead his company's development in a new age of arms supremacy.

Stark was reckless and arrogant in his success, sleeping with women all over the world, and meeting a young Aldrich Killian back in 1999. He would waste vast amounts of money on trinkets and cars, still having ever more in his accounts.

This was cut short after a weapons test in Afghanistan, where he was kidnapped by members of the Ten Rings organization. Stark would remain in captivity for three months after Ho Yinsen saved his life by magnetizing his heart (to keep the shrapnel away). In this time, Stark not only miniaturized his company's arc reactor technology, but created his first Iron Man suit to escape. Moved by the collateral damage of Ho Yinsen's death, as well as seeing his own arms in the terrorist cell, Stark continued to innovate and improve his idea of a powered suit of armor until he created his first combat-ready suit: the Mk. III armor. He used this to save Ho Yinsen's home village of Gulmira, though was intercepted by a few Air Force fighters before his good friend Colonel Rhodes called them off.

Determined to track more of his illicit shipments and destroy them, he asked his assistant Pepper Potts to pull up the records from Stane's computer, where she discovered that Stane was the one that facilitated Tony's kidnapping and assassination attempt. Once he realized his, he was forced to fight Stane in a new Iron Monger suit (while Tony's suit wasn't even at full power. This ended up with Stane getting cooked by a massive arc reactor overload, followed by Tony's famous statement: "I am Iron Man."

After months of playing the super hero, as well as creating a new suit, prototyping another, and refusing to surrender any of his tech to the government, Stark was nearly assassinated by a Russian thug named Ivan Vanko using arc reactor technology to power his weapons systems. Disheartened, with the government trying to push for the acquisition of his suits (via Rhodes), Stark got hammered at one of his own parties in his Mk. IV suit, nearly destroying his mansion in a duel with Rhodes wearing the Mk. II.

The next day, Tony was confronted by Nick Fury about the effects of palladium poisoning due to Stark's arc reactor, as well as revealing that Stark's new assistant Natalie Rushman was actually a highly trained S.H.I.E.L.D. agent sent to keep tabs on him. Fury presented Stark with a lot of his father's old work in an attempt to find a cure for Stark's poisoning. Shortly after, Vanko contacted Stark, revealing that he was still alive and out for blood. Finding out that one of his business rivals had saved Vanko, Stark hurried and ended up in the Stark Expo battle, saving Pepper again and becoming romantically involved shortly afterwards.

A few months later, finishing up applying his green energy project to the newly built Stark Tower in New York, Tony was contacted by Phil Coulson about the Avengers Initiative, being told that Loki had arrived and was threatening the safety of the planet. He flew out to Germany to apprehend the Norse god, and shortly after briefly dueled Thor as well, but ultimately brought Loki back to the S.H.I.E.L.D. helicarrier. After a brief argument with Fury, Rogers, and the other Avengers, he worked with Captain America to repair one of the helicarrier's damaged thrusters as Loki escaped. Rogers was instrumental in the Battle of New York, nearly sacrificing himself to keep New York from being hit in a nuclear strike.

Months later, Stark's PTSD and anxiety had driven him to construct 35 new Iron Man armors, but after his former bodyguard Happy was nearly killed in a Ten Rings "bombing," Stark threatened the Mandarin, head of the Ten Rings, which resulted in his Malibu mansion being bombarded with missiles as he escaped with his very experimental Mk. XLII. After some undercover digging, he found that Aldrich Killian was behind the Mandarin bombings, and with Rhodes' help exposed the Mandarin as Trevor Slattery—a down-on-his-luck actor simply playing the part—and overthrew A.I.M.'s attempt at assassinating the president. Shortly after, Stark detonated all of his previous Iron Man suits at the battle on the Norco, vowing to focus more on Pepper.

Within a few years, however, Stark had returned with a new suit, helping to recover Loki's scepter from a HYDRA base in Sokovia, and with Banner's help accidentally created Ultron with it (who proceeded to destroy J.A.R.V.I.S.). Stark worked tirelessly to shut Ultron out of his and Rhodes' suits, as well as having to deploy his new Hulk Buster armor to prevent the destruction of a South African city. He confronted Ultron a few days later with the other Avengers and Vision, an synthetic robot created with J.A.R.V.I.S.'s old code matrix, destroying the city of Sokovia but saving almost all of the citizens involved.

Stark recently retired from the Avengers, going back to live with Pepper and focus on moving on (but still funding the superhero team).

Bruce Banner—The Hulk

It's been a fair while since we put out a real Avenger, but the Hulk is certainly an easier one to do then, say, Stark (I'm sorry guys, he has a lot of suits I have to make for him). The Hulk is also one of the only Marvel heroes we've seen thus far that utilize the Gimmick Hindrance, and is fairly unique in that aspect.

He is also unique in being the only main Avenger who has changed actors between films, and the only character in the larger MCU whose first movie seems to only be semi-canonical, as the character of Banner is written to have a totally different personality and altered skill-set. As such, some aspects of Norton's Banner, like his hand-to-hand capabilities and his charismatic presence, may be tuned down to be more in line with the modern Ruffalo Banner. Hulk hasn't been altered too terribly much.

Bruce Banner was a respected biochemist and nuclear physicist, working at Culver University. In 2005, Banner and his then-girlfriend were recruited to work on a top-secret military program under the guise of radiation resistance (though it was actually another attempt at replicating Erskine's serum), under the watch of General Ross (Banner's girl's father). A few months into the project, Banner was so confident in his research that he used himself as the first test subject, but the process went horribly wrong. Now, whenever Bruce gets angry, excited, or his heart rate simply goes high enough, he transforms into the mindless powerhouse, the Hulk!

After his first transformation, the military began to chase Banner, looking to control Hulk for their own purposes. After realizing what the Hulk could do, Bruce went into hiding, fleeing the country and leaving behind everything to make sure the Hulk did as little damage as he could. Bruce was international for five years, learning to control his pulse as best he could until he could find a cure for his condition.

After failing to concoct an antidote himself, and being found again by the military, he decided to meet with the anonymous Mr. Blue, finally re-entering the country. Unfortunately, he ended up back at Culver University, trying to find any information he could about the experiment that transformed him, but the military intercepted him and unleashed the Hulk again, and this time the world finally saw the Hulk publicly for the first time. After a very short clash with Captain Blonsky and his knock-off serum, he escaped and made it to New York, meeting Mr. Blue (Samuel Sterns), who found a temporary suppression for the Hulk.

Shortly after this, Banner was captured, but released shortly to deal with Blonsky, now an enormous monster trashing Harlem. After a brief rematch, Blonsky was apprehended and the Hulk escaped. In this time, he learned to control the Hulk to a degree, able to steer him in the right direction and summon him when he needed.

Banner made it to Calcutta, where he hid for another two years before Natasha Romanoff found him, recruiting him for S.H.I.E.L.D. to track down the tesseract using gamma radiation signatures. He was brought aboard the S.H.I.E.L.D. helicarrier and given a lab, but due to Loki's schemes, the Hulk was once again triggered aboard the helicarrier. Thor fought to subdue the Hulk, keeping him from trashing the entire carrier. Hulk was eventually knocked out by falling from an exploding F-16 into the ground. He shortly arrived back in New York to assist the other Avengers in repelling the Chitauri invasion.

After this, Banner went into S.H.I.E.L.D. protection, befriending Tony Stark and working solely in R&D. In addition, he worked with Stark to create a new Iron Man armor, just in case the Hulk went out of control someday. He occasionally assisted the other Avengers in "Code Green" events, aiming the Hulk at HYDRA or other important targets. After recovering Loki's scepter from HYDRA, he and Stark worked to create the Ultron A.I. to help defend the earth from any other world-ending events. This went wrong and Ultron went mad. In a mission to intercept Ultron in South Africa, the Hulk was unleashed upon a small African city by Scarlet Witch, forcing him to be subdued by Stark.

Because of this, while he assisted in transferring JARVIS into the Vision, and in rescuing Romanoff and the Sovokian civilians, Banner has gone back into hiding, fearing the Hulk once again. His whereabouts are unknown to the Avengers.

Power Stunts:
  • Energy Control (6): Fire/Heat, Large Burst Template. Limitation (–1, nullify only). Hulk claps his hands together so hard, the shockwave can put out almost any fire.
  • Earthquake (2): By slamming his fists into the ground, the Hulk can create a crack in stone and earth that can trip up his enemies.

Thor—God of Thunder

Our second Avenger to earn an entry here, Thor was one of those few that I simply couldn't represent his powers (particularly the power of Mjolnir) without amping up things a bit. This is why I added another Power Level: Deity, giving you 90 Power Points, and a total of 100.

With that minor tweak, I think I've managed to fully capture the awesome might of this Norse deity.

Clocking in at well over a thousand years old, Thor Odinson is the prince of Asgard and protector of the Nine Realms. He and his brother Loki were raised together, though Thor was groomed by his father, Odin, while Loki was taught by their mother, Frigga. Gifted with the hammer Mjolnir, Thor became one of the greatest warriors of Asgard, as well as being the strongest by a wide margin.

This power, however, was accompanied by an almost legendary arrogance and brash violence. Thor's policy was always "hit first, ask questions later," which came to a head when the Jotun attempted to break into Odin's weapons vault. He left with Loki, Sif, and the Warriors Three to Jotunheim himself, nearly starting a war, and for this act he was stripped of his power and title, banished to Midgard until he could prove himself worthy to wield Mjolnir again.

Even as a human, Thor's strength was almost unparalleled, but his landing on Earth left him in unfamiliar territory. With the help of some friends, including Jane Foster, he found the crash site of Mjolnir, guarded by a S.H.I.E.L.D. outpost. Upon reaching it—mostly by smashing through about a dozen S.H.I.E.L.D. personnel—he was not found worthy and detained. Loki then briefly visited, telling him that their father had died and their mother forbade his return. He was humbled by his circumstances, and began to learn the human way of life when Sif and the Warriors Three arrived to tell him that Loki betrayed them.

They were shortly followed by the Destroyer, and after nearly sacrificing himself, Thor was found worthy and Mjolnir returned his power to him once again. He quickly made his way back to Asgard, fighting his brother and destroying the Bifrost bridge to save Jotunheim. After Loki dropped into the abyss, Thor spent the next year fighting and defending the Nine Realms until his brother somehow turned up again in Midgard, and Odin drew enormous reserves of Dark Energy to send Thor back.

Thor found his brother, and after a brief fight with Tony Stark and with the Hulk, helped the newly formed Avengers to fight off the Chitauri invaders and bring his brother back home to be imprisoned. One he arrived he went back to fighting across the Realms until Jane seemingly disappeared from Heimdall's view. He quickly returned to Earth once again to find that Jane was harboring the ancient Aether, bringing her back to Asgard for treatment.

Shortly after, the Dark Elves arrived, searching for the Aether and killing Frigga, and Thor broke Loki free to help him destroy the Aether and defeat the Dark Elf threat. After a short battle with Maliketh and Kurse, including Loki's sacrifice, Thor engaged Maliketh and defeated him in one-on-one combat, even with the power of the Aether, before convincing Odin to let him stay on Earth.

A year or two later, he was called back to help the other Avengers retrieve the scepter Loki used in New York and defeat the maniacal A.I. Ultron, but during this time received a vision of what appeared to be Ragnarok. After the threat was taken care of, Thor returned to Asgard to investigate, leaving Earth and the Avengers behind.

Thor also possesses a custom Edge to summon Mjolnir back to his hand:

Recall Device
Requirements: Novice, Arcane Background (Super Powers), Agility d8+, must have the Device modifier on the flight power
This characters Devices may be propelled to him from almost anywhere. As a free action, the character's Devices begin to fly towards him at the character's normal flying pace and are equipped as a free action once they reach him.
Devices that Require Activation or are Slow to Activate are not activated upon arrival and must still be activated as normal.

Power Stunts:
  • Explode (9): Damage 6d8, LBT. Device (–2, Mjolnir). In Thor, Thor channels his lightning and releases it in an enormous burst of power around him, destroying dozens of frost giants and sending the ground around him into the air.

Thor is really scary; I'd really rather not mess with him even with other supers.

Steve Rogers—Captain America

This is it: the world's first super hero.

Well, the first super hero in the MCU, anyways. One of the founding members of the Avengers, Rogers is a man out of time, but that's not going to keep him from badassing his way onto the blog. I've been told that this is one of the best character conversions that I've done, and I've made some minor tweaks, but I hope you guys find this as interesting as others have.

Name: Steven Grant Rogers
Race: Human
Experience: 0 (Novice)
Agility d6; Smarts d8; Spirit d10; Strength d4; Vigor d4
Pace 6; Parry 2; Charisma 0; Toughness 4
Hindrances: Anemic, Code of Honor, Heroic, Loyal, Overconfident
Edges: Brave, Elan
Skills: Driving d4, Knowledge (Battle) d4, Notice d8, Persuasion d4, Shooting d4, Stealth d6, Swimming d6, Throwing d4

Born on July 4, 1918, Steve Rogers was about as physically frail as a man could be: asthma, anemia, small stature, poor health in general. but he had an enormous heart and always tried to stand up for the good of others, and embraced the notion of justice and free will. Of course, this garnered the attention of a lot of bullies taking out their frustrations on the goodie-two-shoes and Rogers was constantly beat up.

Steve's father died in service to the country, his mother of tuberculosis. The closest thing to a family he had left was his best friend Bucky Barnes, who not only took Steve in but helped him defend himself from the bullies and other unsavory types that came after him. Even after high school, Steve still stood up to the bigger guy and would never back down.

Steve attended the Auburndale Art School in Brooklyn before the United States were pulled into World War II. At this point, with the help of his best friend, Steve trained furiously to try and whip his body into shape to be able to join the armed forces, but despite all his work Steve was rejected from service. Bucky, however, enlisted in the Army, waiting in the reserves.

Steve continued to apply for duty, altering his admissions information every time in hopes of being taken in, but was finally approached by Dr. Abraham Erskine during one of his attempts. After a short test of character, Steve was admitted and added for qualifications for Project Rebirth. During his training, though he was physically frail, he showed remarkable spirit and courage, making him the clear choice to receive a powerful "super-soldier" serum (enhanced with Vita Rays), which enhanced his speed, strength, health, reflexes, and physiology to the peak of human condition. Unfortunately, during this procedure, Dr. Erskine was shot and killed by an agent of HYDRA attempting to retrieve this serum for their own purposes, though Rogers thwarted this plan.

AWOL Inventory: Blue Steel Pot (Armor +2, 50% chance vs head shot), Medium Shield (Parry +1, Armor +2 vs ranged), Boots, Pistol Holster, Uniform.

Still inexperienced, and with any other samples of the successful serum destroyed, Rogers was brought to the forefront of American propaganda about the war effort. After months of performing USO shows and being championed as the face of the military, a tour to the actual front went south. Catching wind of a large number of soldiers going missing and held prisoner by HYDRA, Rogers went (with the help of Howard Stark and Peggy Carter) to the PoW camp himself, saving more than 400 men—along with Bucky, who had also been captured—with little combat experience and a bit of stealth. He also recovered some kind of specialized ammunition, running on Tesseract technology.

World War II Inventory: Carbon Polymer Armor (Armor +2, +4 vs ballistics), Blue Steel Pot (Armor +2, 50% chance vs head shot), Vibranium Shield (Str+d6, AP 4), Colt M1911A1 (2d6+1, AP 1, 12/24/48, Semi-Auto, 7 Shots), Ammo Pouch ×4, Boots, Suspenders, Pistol Holster, Web Belt.

He was then officially promoted to captain and given an indestructible vibranium shield and his own special unit: the Howling Commandos. Over the next year, Rogers and his unit cooperatively dismantled HYDRA operations and kept them contained in Europe. Near the end of the war, on their final mission, they lost Bucky in a tragic accident. This was immediately followed by a raid on HYDRA's main base that ended with Rogers boarding HYDRA's Valkyrie craft to prevent their bombings of several major cities across the globe, including New York.

This resulted with a showdown with Johann Schmidt, who was transported away by the Tesseract, though the craft was heavily damaged and Steve was forced to put it down in the ice, sacrificing himself.

Battle of New York Inventory: Avengers Uniform (Armor +2, +4 vs ballistics, negate 4 ballistic AP), Blue Steel Pot (Armor +4, 50% chance vs head shot), Commlink, Vibranium Shield (Str+d6, AP 4), Boots, Ammo Pouch ×4

Seventy years later, Rogers was recovered from the ice by S.H.I.E.L.D., much to his surprise. He spent the next few weeks in shock, catching up on lost time and opting not to call Peggy, fearing her reaction to seeing him. Soon, however, he was recruited for the Avengers Initiative, and brought Loki in custody to the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier.

After discovering that S.H.I.E.L.D. was using the Tesseract to develop weapons, akin to HYDRA weapons back in World War II, and discovering that Loki's intended strategy was to hit New York, he commandeered a quinjet with Romanoff and the recently recovered agent Barton to join in on the action, fighting off the Chitauri invasion and commanding the battlefield with the other Avengers in the Battle of New York. After the portal was closed by Stark, Rogers parted ways with the rest of the Avengers to take up a place as a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent.

S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Inventory: STRIKE Stealth Uniform (Armor +4, +4 vs ballistics, negate 4 ballistic AP), Blue Steel Pot (Armor +4, 50% chance vs head shot), Commlink, Vibranium Shield (Str+d6, AP 4), Boots, Ammo Pouch ×4

Receiving intense training and experience with S.H.I.E.L.D. special ops, including several with Romanoff, Steve was shaping up to be one of the world's greatest melee combatants and the ultimate soldier. He was fast, stealthy, highly aware of his surroundings, and lethal. After a mission sent to recover a pirated ship—the Lemurian Star—and finding Romanoff recovering intelligence instead of dealing with pirates, Steve confronted Fury about this compartmentalization. His concerns were justified when it was revealed that HYDRA had infiltrated S.H.I.E.L.D. and was planning on using souped-up Helicarriers to commit mass murder and secure control over the world. After an encounter with the Winter Soldier, and the help of Romanoff and Sam Wilson, he toppled the Helicarriers and thwarted HYDRA's plans. He then helped to lead the Avengers' campaign against HYDRA, culminating in their assault on Baron Von Strucker's base in Sovokia and receiving the Chitauri scepter.

Steve was present during the Ultron incursion, dealing with several drones and even standing up to Ultron himself for a little while, and was one of the Avenger's assisting with the evacuation of Sokovia before the city was sent hurtling back into the earth.

Steve is currently training and leading the New Avengers team, comprised of Black Widow, War Machine, Falcon, Vision, and Scarlet Witch.

Power Stunts:
  • Aquatic (1): Limitation (–1, no breathing underwater). In The First Avenger, Steve used his powerful body to catch up to a fleeing HYDRA personal submarine to retrieve the agent and the super soldier serum.
  • Resistance (3): Fall Damage, +4 to resist effects, direct attacks cause half damage. Device (–2). In Winter Soldier, Steve braced his vibranium shield to absorb the impact of falling more than 20 stories, leaving with minor discomfort.

James Rhodes—War Machine

We finally, finally get to our first real super hero. I know he isn't one of the big 4, but honestly, War Machine is a pretty imposing figure on his own.

We should be seeing Rhodey again in Civil War, so expect an updated post some time after next May.

James Rhodes is a long-time friend of Tony Stark, even attending MIT with him. James, however, joined the U.S. Air Force, and quickly scaled up the ranks to Lieutenant Colonel, eventually working as the military liason to Stark Industries. This relationship often lead to James being Tony's (typically ignored) conscience, or covering for him on multiple occasions.

Rhodes is an expert marksman, having received extensive firearms and combat training with the military. He is also an accomplished pilot, and though he tends to brag a fair bit he is one of the most loyal companions a hero could ask for.

Rhodes' job didn't get any easier when Stark ousted himself as Iron Man, as now he had to cover for his friend's irresponsibility with a suit of power armor. Rhodes constantly worked to try and keep the government away from Stark's armor, keeping a positive spin on Tony's immature behavior with the suit.

Unfortunately, during a party at Stark's mansion—where Tony was very drunk—Rhodey finally had the last straw, taking Stark's Mk. II armor, and even engaging in a fight against Tony in his suit. He quickly returned it to the Edwards Air Force Base, and the military began working on upgrading the suit, enlisting the aid of Hammer Industries in making the Mk. II combat-ready.

This new and improved suit was shown off at the Stark Expo along with Hammer's drones, and assisted Iron Man in dealing with Whiplash, a Russian crook that hacked into the Hammer Drones and was threatening civilians. Rhodes held on to this suit for the U.S. military until Stark approached him with an offer: Tony would improve on the suit's weapons and design as long as Colonel Rhodes was the only individual cleared to use it. The result is the War Machine armor:

This improved on many of the flaws of the original (several of which carried over from the flaws of the Mk. II suit), and added a more powerful, integrated shoulder mounted cannon, a higher durability alloy for the armor, improved flight stabilizers, more powerful repulsor beams, and a micro-missile system. This suit was primarily employed in dealing with the Ten Rings terrorist organization in the year or so following the events of the Stark Expo.

After the battle of New York, however, War Machine was rebranded as the Iron Patriot—a temporary name that "did better with focus groups—and continued to hit Ten Rings cells worldwide. This culminated in Rhodes' participation in stopping a plot to assassinate the president of the United States, though the terrorists were able to steal the suit itself with the use of Extremis-enhanced soldiers.

Due to the bad press the armor was receiving after its involvement with the presidential kidnapping, it was restored to its original paintjob and was made available to loan to S.H.I.E.L.D., who utilized him at the battle of Sovokia to exterminate Ultron sentries.

Power Stunts:
  • Explode (7): Damage 5d8, MBT, Heavy Weapon. Device (–1, War Machine Armor), Contingent on flight. In the Iron Man 3 Prelude comic, Rhodes boosts his armor into the ground at several hundred miles an hour, disrupting the ground and tossing more than a dozen Ten Rings terrorists into the air, as well as damaging one of their tanks.

Rhodes is currently enlisted in the New Avengers roster under Captain America and Black Widow.
